Dream Machine
15.09.2010 - 23.10.2010
Private Viewing 15.09.2010 from 18.00

A group exhibition with sound, installation, sculpture and painting celebrating the 180th Anniversary of the first ever passenger railway line.

Artists Nicola Dale and Ailis Ni Riain, Phil Lockhart, Tom Palin, Richard Proffitt.

DreamMachine_DownMetal is housed in Edge Hill Station, the oldest passenger railway still in use and to mark the 180th Anniversary of the opening of the Liverpool to Manchester railway they present Dream Machine.

With Artists from both Liverpool and Manchester this exhibition will celebrate and explore the idea of the first rail journey made between two cities, and the siginificance of this historic moment on modern life.

Through a series of large-scale works which reflect on time, routine, direction and discipline: qualities that all inform the artistic process, the exhibition seeks to reflect the beat and rhythm of train travel. Influenced by the knowledge that railway timetabling or ‘railway time’ was in fact the catalyst for a standardised time system across the UK, the first time regional and London times met, the local and national aligned, the work will show how the train journey is an enduring source for artistic inspiration.

The Future Station group is an open network of individuals who meet every month at the station to develop ideas for the spaces, work with Metal’s artists- in-residence, and to create and encourage collaboration between the group.  Metal have been based in the area for 5 years working with local residents, schools, individuals and organisations to excavate personal testimonies and imaginative responses to the local area. In October 2009 they renovated the former station buildings at Edge Hill, the world’s oldest existing passenger railway station, to become a space for local people and artists from all disciplines to come together, to create new work and to share ideas
